Planning Medical Surge Space Beyond the Bed Count

A bed count is only one part of a medical surge-space brief. The clinical operator also needs to define the services, staff work areas, equipment and support functions that allow the facility to operate. Starting with those relationships helps turn a capacity goal into a layout that can be evaluated.

Define the intended care setting

Ask the clinical operator to establish which services the temporary facility will support and what rooms and equipment they require. Identify which functions are provided within the new facility and which depend on another location.

Use that scope to develop the patient and staff movement plan. The building proposal should follow the clinical brief.

Include the supporting spaces

Review workstations, supplies, storage, service access and staff support alongside patient space. Identify the equipment that needs a dedicated location or connection.

Document the proposed building systems and customer-supplied equipment. The clinical, facilities and supplier teams should agree on the interfaces and their responsibilities.

Consider a usable first phase

If the facility will be established in stages, define the first complete operating arrangement. Supporting rooms and services need to be available with the functions they serve.

Plan acceptance and later changes

The operating team and project specialists should establish the checks required before use. Include later additions or relocations in the site and delivery plan.
